Senior and junior girls will face off against each other in powder puff football Monday, Oct. 9 at the football field to raise money for the MSU survivors of sexual assault.
Carrigan VanDyke (12) chose to do powder puff since the money goes to a good cause and she gets to have fun with her classmates.
“I play defense which means I try to stop the players that play offense who are trying to get back to their quarterback,” VanDyke said.
The game had been postponed the first time due to the date being on a religious holiday and coaches schedules not aligning, Also, students who participate in fall sports wouldn’t be able to attend the game when it was originally scheduled so they had to change the dates.
“I don’t think of the game as competition, I feel like it’s a good way to get to know each other better and just have fun with one another,” VanDyke said.
Anyone who wants to see the game will have to pay $5. All the money goes to the MSU survivors of sexual assault.
Maggie Swords (11) was one of the many juniors to show up to practice and participate. She wanted to get more involved in school events; this is why she signed up for powder puff. “I’m feeling good about the team.I think we have a lot of good practice and our coaches get along with us very well, they just really want to win and we really want to win too,” Swords said.
So far practices have been going really well for Swords. She’s enjoying the team bonding and being able to have fun with her teammates.
“We split into groups and work on the play we plan to do in the game,” Swords said.“I thought it’d be a lot of fun and it turns out I was right,it’s very fun.”
Powder puff means different things to a lot of people but to Swords powder puff means having a good time. She’s close with most people on the team, everyone on the team is nice too so they all get along which creates a fun experience for Swords.
“It’s kind of funny as our coaches are taking this seriously and everyone else is just there having a good time.”
Still, she hopes the juniors can take home a win over the seniors.
“We plan to win, we have a lot of plays memorized and I think we have a good shot at winning this,” Swords said.
