Students for Environmental Action (SEA) hosted their biannual can drive on Sep. 27. And 29. Presidents of the club, Kelly Maier (12) and Sam Tuinstra (12) started this future club tradition last year.
Volunteers were assigned an area in the school to go door by door asking teachers if they had cans to give them. Teachers who had to leave early left their bags of cans outside their door.
“We want to start to do this thing where there’s recycling bins and can return next to every trash can in school. It makes it easier to collect for every can drive too,” Maier said.
On Sep. 29 the can drive opened up to the community allowing them to bring in cans volunteers collected them. Others organized them into glass, cans, and non returnables. A third group returned the cans or recycled them if not returnable.
But not all volunteers were a part of SEA. Maier had the opportunity to offer the can drive as a main event for National Honor society (NHS) members.
“It provides us with a bunch of volunteers cause we really do need the manpower,” Tuinstra said.
Favour Nwobu (11) was one of many who did it for NHS.
SEA accumulated over $500 over this year’s Fall Can Drive. They plan on renovating the school courtyards and bring more green to the high school.
“But most of all, we want to promote recycling,” said Maier.
