This month’s Athlete of the Month is Bronwyn Minnick (12), who just concluded her third and final diving season. In just three years of competing, she’s grown into one of the state’s top divers.
Minnick’s season culminated in a second-place finish at this year’s state championship, East Lansing’s highest placement in over 50 years. Along the way, she also claimed victories at both the Conference and Regional meets, cementing her status as one of the most accomplished divers in school history.
Minnick’s journey into diving began her sophomore year after years of gymnastics. Despite her late start, she has improved rapidly, finishing 10th at the state meet as a junior before jumping to a runner-up finish this year.
“It was a mix of both [coaching and experience], but I think mainly just practicing more,” Minnick said. “I trained over the summer this year, which I didn’t do in previous years. So, the extra training helped.”
This season in particular she approached with the intention of both performing well but also making the most of the remainder of her high school career.
“This season, I just wanted to do well,” Minnick said. “I wanted to perform my best.”
While Minnick typically only competes as a diver, Michigan high school swimming and diving are combined. This gave her the opportunity to take a step off the diving board. At this year’s conference meet, Minnick swam with other East Lansing divers.
“I got to swim a relay with the divers, which was a lot of fun,” Minnick said.
As of now, Minnick is deciding whether or not she should dive in college. Regardless of her decision, she is trying to keep her options open by contacting universities she is interested in about potentially diving there.
“I’m unsure if I want to dive in college, but I am emailing college coaches, so we’ll see,” she said.
