The homework help after-school program began on Sept. 15 in room 179 and will continue to provide a place for students to get academic help after school from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. all year long. A certified teacher will always be present, and starting in October, MSU students will be coming in to help tutor students, according to a notification from East Lansing Public Schools.
The program has been going on for a while, but has changed over the last couple of years. According to Associate Principal Jeff Lampi, who helps coordinate the program, it will be more structured around schoolwork this year.
“It used to be a space in the Student Union where the kids would go and just hang out for an hour after school, do homework, chill, relax [or] have a snack,” Lampi said. “But now this year, we’re really focusing on academic support.”
Student advocate Jerry Jones also said that the program provides basic wants and needs for kids such as a warm place to go and after school snacks.
“[The program] isn’t just sitting around, not doing anything,” said Jones. “It’s very helpful. For those who want to check it out, I advise it.”
Lampi says administration has worked to make the after school program more schoolwork-focused as an addition to the school’s academic interventions.
“If you’re interested in spending an hour after school and getting actual help on any of your homework, studying for a test or working on any class work, come and take advantage of it,” Lampi said.
This program is available Monday through Thursday in the health room, which is located on the first floor.
