The Biggby coffee station is a new addition to the school, but do we like it a latte, or is it despresso?
First of all, we appreciate the convenience and efficiency of the coffee station. It is placed somewhere you can’t miss it, and the cafeteria workers are kind and helpful. The syrups and sauces are a nice touch, and it is helpful for students needing a quick caffeine boost.
While the Biggby station is nice in theory, there are some things that we think need to be changed. Many students prefer iced coffee, so we think it is necessary to include an ice machine or an iced coffee option.
In addition to needing an iced option, the station could benefit from being a bit more sanitary. The whipped cream was sitting out in the open with no cap. The coffee is self-serve, which means the nozzle could potentially become contaminated since it is not being attended to. Whipped cream is also required to be refrigerated and cannot sit out for longer than 2 hours.
They have a couple of syrup options, all of which are sugar free. We think it would greatly upgrade the system if they added a few more syrup options. They also have a variety of chocolate sauces to add to your cup, which is appreciated.
As coffee enthusiasts, the coffee was not completely up to par with our varied palates, especially considering the fact that the coffee was three dollars for a small self-serve drip coffee. We think it would be greatly enhanced if the school was able to offer espresso based options. While the self-serve option would not be compatible with espresso, having a staffed station rather than students making the drinks themselves would make this addition feasible. For students who prefer not to wait, a self-serve drip option could still be offered. However, although this would be greatly appreciated by students, we understand that this would be costly and may not be possible.
We tried both the vanilla and caramel flavored syrups. The caramel flavor was not very strong and we didn’t think it really came through. The vanilla was overly sweet.
They carry three flavors of creamer, regular half and half, caramel macchiato and Irish cream. The flavor of the caramel was not extremely potent, which was disappointing but the fact that they had multiple creamers was a plus. The Irish cream was also very sweet, but it had a nice flavor.
Overall, the Biggby station is a positive addition to the school, but with improvements to drink options, sanitation and quality, it could be even more appealing and enjoyable for students.
