What started as a simple idea among friends has turned into one of the newest clubs at ELHS, surrounded by a shared love for food. Carnivore Club has evolved over the months, and now it’s something that students look forward to on Mondays.
“The goal is to spread the love of meat and the connection that it can have between people,” Curran said. “We like to explore all of the good flavors and positivity it brings to your life.”
Members of the club had the idea the previous year but were faced with some setbacks. The administration didn’t approve of the idea due to the name of the club which was originally “meat club”.
“We didn’t stop trying, so we switched the name to carnivore club this year,” Curran said. “We went through the proper steps of getting a club going and it just went on from there.”
The club meets every other Monday, where students cook together, eat together and learn together. Carnivore Club has grown to almost 200 members but only about 10 to 15 students show up at the meetings.
“We have an Instagram account that allows us to spread the word of our club,” Curran said. “We also spread the word by just telling people about the club throughout the school day. We encourage people to try and come and try it out.”
The club recently hosted a chili cook-off for the first time at East Lansing Public Library. The event was supposed to bring people together to eat good chili and share the love for it.
“We didn’t have as many chilis as we wanted,” Curran said. “The people that were there though, I mean, it was a family.”
The chili cook-off winner was Mr.Gorman and the club decided to name the event after him, considering he was the first winner of the event.
“The chili was delicious and it was a special event,” Curran said. “The events we host really just bring us all together and it feels like a family every time we are together.”
