Students from various mid-Michigan schools will have a chance to showcase their artwork at the 19th annual MSUFCU Student Art Exhibit, open for viewing through Feb. 27.
Multiple mediums of art will be shown, including paintings, sketches, 3D pieces, photography and animations.
The art show started in 2008, with the purpose of displaying creativity and supporting high school artists.
Students will compete for a prize of $300 for first place, $200 for second place and $100 for third. Ten honorable mentions will also be awarded with cash prizes. In addition, there will be a $50 prize for the Social Media Award. The student winning the most combined likes on the MSUFCU Student Art Exhibit Instagram and Facebook pages will receive this award. Local artists will participate as judges.
Mariana Kribs (11), is participating in the art show for the first time this year. Her drawing “Loki”, was inspired by her dog, and drawn with oil pastels. So far, Kribs has enjoyed her experience in the art show.
“It’s been really positive, and it’s nice to get your art out there and get more experience getting into art shows,” Kribs said. “It’s fun to get people’s opinions on your art and see what they think about it.”
Saniyah Rasheed (12) visited Evanston, Illinois over the summer, and took her inspiration for her piece from a beach there where she felt peaceful. The goal of her painting, “A Windy Day,” was to capture the calm that she had felt in that moment.
“I took a picture, and then I decided to use it for my painting to try and give a feeling of relaxation,” Rasheed said.
If she participated again, Rasheed would submit a piece featuring a person, instead of a landscape.
Both Kribs and Rasheed thought the art exhibit was a fun experience that they would like to participate in again.
